Ashwagandha, common name of Withania somnifera, also known as "Indian Ginseng" is one of the most used plants in the Ayurvedic tradition.
The plant is a woody shrub that grows up to about two meters in height, covered with small hairs that give it a gray reflection.
It is native to India and can also be found in some parts of the Mediterranean and Africa. It is one of the very few herbs in the world with a complex mixture of bioactive substances capable of acting on a widespread level. Among the chemical constituents, the most biologically active ones of Withania somnifera include alkaloids and saponins, but above all lactones known as withanolides, including withaferin A and D.
The name Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means "horse smell" to indicate the ability of this plant to give vigor and strength to this animal known for its energy, prowess and resistance.
It is an excellent tonic-adaptogen, ideal in stressful situations also for its positive action on relaxation, contributing positively to physical and mental well-being. For these reasons it is included, in the form of a plant extract, in the preparation of specific food supplements for both relaxation and sleep.
Furthermore, in case of tiredness, both physical and mental, it is useful for combating the effects of stress, improving learning times and memory.
Finally, it is also a natural antioxidant, which contributes to the body's natural defenses. To increase interest in this plant, we point out that there are some studies being demonstrated on the effects of this on important pathologies such as Alzheimer's, diabetes and tumors.
In any case, we always remember that supplements should not be intended as a substitute for a correct and healthy diet, which should always be taken after consulting a doctor and paying attention to any side effects.
